Social Good Roasters started in 2018 as the first welfare facility in Japan to introduce a full-fledged roasting machine and espresso machine, even when micro-roasters were not yet common. It was a place where people who love coffee and want to work professionally in coffee, regardless of disabilities, could gather and challenge themselves to become baristas and roasters.

In our pursuit of providing high-quality coffee, we have been working on “hand sorting,” which was still rare at the time. Hand sorting involves meticulously removing malformed beans and insect-damaged beans by hand before roasting to maximize the potential of the coffee. However, perfect hand sorting by hand takes a tremendous amount of time, with a dozen people only able to process 6.5 kg in a day. Despite this, the coffee roasted with such effort became a symbol of Social Good Roasters, and touching the raw beans allowed us to understand their condition and the characteristics of their origin, making it an indispensable experience for learning about coffee. Knowing and learning about raw beans connects to our roasting and extraction techniques, which are the foundation of our coffee quality.

However, over time, the impression spread that sorting was a job suitable for people with disabilities, and the importance of this work in improving coffee quality was not fully understood.

Six years after our founding, many coffee professionals with high skills have grown, regardless of disabilities. In our efforts to improve wages and compensation commensurate with their efforts and abilities, we have decided to set a price for products with perfect sorting as a prime line and separate the prices from other products. This decision is driven by our desire to correctly convey the value of sorting and the meticulous work behind it, as well as our passion for quality.

We regret that this will result in a price increase for customers who have been using sorted products, but our desire to provide high-quality coffee at a price that can be enjoyed daily and to have many people drink Social Good Roasters’ coffee remains unchanged. Despite the rising costs of raw materials and the soaring prices of everything, we will keep the prices of non-prime line products as stable as possible. Additionally, we have changed the packaging specifications to make it easier for more customers to purchase, starting from 100g.

The quality of coffee with perfect sorting is undoubtedly high. However, it is our pride that all the coffee we offer is of high quality. We hope you will enjoy both the prime line, which focuses on sorting, and the regular line, both of which are delicious coffees that Social Good Roasters confidently delivers.

In closing, when we first started six years ago, it was common to hear, “Products made at welfare facilities can only be sold out of pity,” and “There’s no way people with disabilities can handle such a full-fledged roasting machine.” Despite this, our colleagues at Social Good Roasters have produced high-quality coffee that overturns such common sense through their own efforts. This decision is significant, but we chose it because we want to challenge ourselves to spread the value of our work more widely.
